HTML

HTML (Hyper Text Mark-up Language) is the specific standard for the World Wide Web thereby making it compatible with all systems.  It is the tag-based ASCII authoring language in which pages for the web are written.  HTML code defines how various parts of web pages will appear.  As a set of codes that are displayed over a web browser, HTML acts as a guide telling the browser how to interpret a page, giving instructions on how it has been set up and where and how text and graphics should be placed i.e. bold or italics.

HTML documents are written in plain text with tags which define the text they surround.  HTML also enables a word or a group of words or an image to be linked to another Internet file i.e. a hyperlink.

Since HTML is a mark-up language (coding that indicates layout and styling) it is essentially static in nature and requires dynamic language such as JavaScript to enable web pages to perform interactive tasks.
