The recent reporting of 2 incidents in Redditch, Worcestershire has raised the alarm concerning potential security breaches for any individuals with wireless internet connection.

In both instances, neighbours had reported suspicious individuals using laptops whilst parked outside people's homes.  West Mercia police arrested and cautioned the individuals concerned for dishonestly obtaining electronic communications services with intent to avoid payment.

PC Tony Humphreys of West Mercia police emphasised that home-owners with wireless internet connection should be vigilant and protect themselves against "piggy-backing":

"Wireless networks don't stop at the walls of your home, and without protection, your neighbours or people in the road outside may be able to connect to your network."

If you are a wi-fi user make sure your network is secure by following the advice of your ISP/broadband provider.  Hackers may use your connection to access illegal sites, turn your PC into a trojan host - or even access your PC to extrapolate personal information.
