2007 Internet Predictions from MSO.net - Xmas 2006 - Remote access

5. Remote access

More and more of us will see the benefits of remote access.  An article published by BBC Click reporter, Chris Long discusses how remote access is becoming more of a necessity as people's reliance on their PCs to fulfil their working commitments increases.

Historically, sharing data remotely was basic (using floppy disks to transfer data from one PC to another), time consuming and only possible if you had the PCs in the same room with a serial lead that could stretch between the two.  This type of remote access was called Laplink, one of the few products able to transfer to Windows XP from MS DOS.

Now, with improved bandwidth and infrastructure, the Internet makes our lives easier.  Some services now enable you to access your computer from any web browser from anywhere in the world.  What's actually happening is that the remote PC is accessing those applications on your home computer.  This means that you can have your documents stored on a USB memory stick and retrieve and change them on the remote PC using the tools on your home PC.  The next issue that needs to be tackled will obviously be security but with the right protocols in place - surely this is the way forward?
