2007 Internet Predictions from MSO.net - Xmas 2006 - Social networking – an increasing presence

2. Social networking - an increasing presence
Social networking was first noticed in 1995 with the website Classmates.com.  Since then the phenomenon has grown in popularity and today there are over 200 sites offering online virtual communities within the public domain.  Currently, the most well-known is MySpace.com which is a music-based social network.  Last year it was reported that the site was receiving more hits than Google.

The idea behind social networking is that a group of founders invite people within their own social network to become members on the site.  These networks can either be based around business networks or focus on such things as colleges, football, golf, cars etc.  As more members join, so do the features that are available such as automatic address book updates, profiles etc.
Social networking is seen by some to be the perfect solution to the problem of social isolation.  Some commentators believe that personal isolation is a by-product of the use of the Internet in our community.  Here at MSO.net, we expect social networking sites to prosper as this issue makes itself heard in the ensuing months.
