In recent months some of our clients have been enquiring about podcasting, a relatively new phenomenon which is fast becoming a new method of communication.

For those of you who have never heard of it, podcasting is a method of publishing audio programs via the Internet.

The term is derived from the iPod™ manufactured by Apple Inc. - the popular electronic gizmo that allows files to be downloaded in either .mp3 or AAC (Apple iTunes™ format).  Until late last year, the primary function was to download music files to enable the iPod to be used as a mobile music player.

The functionality has now evolved into what is termed podcasting.  The name "podcast" is no longer specifically related to the iPod but to any software and hardware combination that permits the downloading and playing of files in user defined timeframes.  Using a feed such as RSS or Atom, independent producers can create their own “radio shows” and distribute information.  Interested parties can subscribe to hear these broadcasts by using “podcatching” software which periodically checks for and downloads new content automatically.  Most podcatching software enables the user to copy podcasts to portable music players and any digital audio player or computer with audio-playing software can play podcasts.
