The BBC's Vision of the future

What we think is a long way off could be just around the corner.

If the BBC is to be believed (and having watched its recent 'Our Vision of the Future' video, I could be convinced), the Corporation is promising in the not-too-distant future, a fully immersive online experience for its audience.

Let's put cynicism to one side (after all, the old dinosaur could be desperately trying to impress us with words and actions it can't possibly fulfil) and consider what is possible now. Also remember that when its iPlayer was launched on Christmas Day, 2007, the online streaming service was way ahead of any competition and still remains popular due to constant improvement.

The BBC's vision is one that encompasses the following: to inform, educate and entertain. From the minute we wake up, our families will exist between a physical and virtual world, the latter enriching rather than isolating, the former demanding nothing less. The aim of the Beeb's R&D partners is to present us with accessible applications wherever we are, doing whatever we enjoy with the capability to interact with our digital neighbours if we so choose.

Watch the video and see if you agree with me - the whole point surely is that it's our choice as consumers if we want to embrace digital innovation. At the point we feel the internet is an invasion upon our lives we can walk away. For everyone else, the next few years is set to be incredibly exciting.
