The importance of keeping your content updated

Do you have upcoming events that need adding to your site? Do you have some important news to share? Are their photos or videos that need updating?

We recommend taking some time to look over your site and ensuring that the content is current, relevant and useful to your target audience.

Ensuring your content is current will also help improve your SEO ranking. “Dwell time” is the amount of time visitors spend on your website, a low dwell time can negatively impact your ranking. However, when you provide useful content, visitors tend to stay longer on your website to consume the information which will, therefore, increase the dwell time.

For education websites

One of the most important sections for you to check and make sure is current is the section of your site that contains your school’s policies. As it is a legal requirement for you to publish your school’s policy documents on your website, it is essential that you make sure, on a regular basis, that you are keeping these up-to-date with any changes that are made to them.

Also, if you have uploaded these documents to your site as files, e.g. a PDF file, instead of as page content, it is best to make sure that you delete any old versions of the file(s) via your content management system, after you have uploaded the new version and updated any links to it on your website. This will ensure that the old file(s) is deleted from the server and can no longer be accessed by mistake, either via someone having bookmarked the file or from a search engine, which may have indexed the file.

For commercial sites

As well as keeping your content current and relevant to your target audience we also recommended to have a terms & conditions agreement. Unlike privacy policies, it is not required by law to be included, a Terms of Service Agreement is a set of regulations which users must agree to follow in order to use a service.

However, Privacy Policies are required by law if you collect personal data from your users i.e. email address, first and last names, shipping address, etc. A privacy policy on your site is intended to inform users of what to expect you as a business to do with their personal information when they make contact or use one of your services.

It is also important to note that when updating images used on your website that you are permitted to use them. In order to avoid any confusion, we recommend using free imagery from sites such as pikwizard, unsplash and pixabay.
